How to grow sales without overwhelming operations

EVO Editorial · · 2 min read
Can your operation handle the next sale?

A stronger sales pipeline can create a new problem: promises increase faster than delivery capacity. Revenue opportunities deserve attention, but accepting every start date can put existing customers at risk.

Before adding volume, map what one additional sale requires from the operation. Include onboarding, review, support and coordination, not just production time.

Find the constrained step

Ask where work is already waiting. The constraint might be specialist review, materials, implementation capacity or customer approvals. More capacity elsewhere will not necessarily shorten that queue.

For illustration, a team may be able to produce ten drafts a week but review only six. Selling ten additional drafts does not create the review capacity needed to finish them.

Plan with usable capacity

Start with the time or units available, then account for existing commitments, variability and foreseeable absence. Do not use the busiest week the team ever survived as the baseline for normal operations.

Compare the expected work from new orders with the capacity of the constrained step. Discuss options before committing: phased starts, a narrower scope, improved workflow or additional qualified capacity.

Connect sales promises to delivery reality

Create a shared view of available start windows and the conditions attached to them. Identify who can approve exceptions and who tells the customer when assumptions change.

Review the effect of any improvement. Faster intake can simply move the queue into another department. Watch the end-to-end outcome, including quality and rework, rather than celebrating one stage in isolation.
