How to build a monthly business management routine

EVO Editorial · · 2 min read
Give the next month a clearer start.

A monthly review connects daily work to the direction of the business. It gives you time to examine patterns that a weekly operating meeting may miss.

The routine should produce a small number of decisions and a clear next cycle. It does not need to become a second reporting bureaucracy.

Close the information gaps

Start with records that are complete enough for the questions being asked. Review financial performance with the appropriate accounting support, then examine sales progress, customer experience, delivery and capacity.

Label estimates and late information. If a number is not comparable with the previous period, explain why before interpreting the change.

Review outcomes and assumptions

Compare the month's intended outcomes with what happened. Separate execution problems from assumptions that turned out to be wrong. An initiative completed on time can still fail to produce the expected result.

Discuss what you learned from customers and where the business remains uncertain. Choose the few questions worth investigating next rather than collecting insights without an owner.

Set the next month's commitments

Decide what continues, what changes and what stops. Assign accountable owners, capacity and review dates. Check the timing of major commitments against the actual resources available.

Keep the record short enough to use during weekly reviews. The monthly plan should influence next week's choices, while weekly evidence should improve the next monthly review.

Maintain the routine

Put preparation and review on the calendar. Name who collects the information and who resolves disagreements about definitions. A repeatable process is easier to maintain when the responsibilities are explicit.
